Sometimes all it takes is one conversation...

As a coach, I often hear that significant transformations require six sessions, which appears to be the industry standard. Whilst that can be true, I've observed that a single conversation can sometimes redirect someone's life.

A few months ago, I spoke with a former colleague who had recovered from a challenging illness but felt stuck in his professional life. He wasn't seeking answers; he needed space to think out loud. A couple of months later when we spoke again, he co-founded a consultancy that was actively trading and felt a renewed sense of purpose. He credited our conversation as instrumental in helping him re-engage with life.

In another instance, a client in his late fifties believed he needed to find his next job. During our discussion, a different question arose: "What if this isn't about your next job at all? What if it's about designing the next 25 years of your life?"

Two weeks later, he shared that he had begun developing plans for a new business aligned with his personal experiences and long-term ambitions. The idea and action were his, but the conversation provided the space for a new perspective.

Coaching isn't about giving advice or solutions; it's about creating an opportunity to step back from the noise, see things differently, and reconnect with the possibilities that already exist.

Whilst, of course, not everyone experiences a breakthrough after one conversation, sometimes what keeps us stuck is not a lack of options but a lack of space to think.

If you're in your fifties or sixties and contemplating what's next—be it retirement, a portfolio career, a new business, or a fresh sense of purpose—perhaps all you need is a conversation. if this resonates with you, please get in touch for a chat
